[개인전] 해파리주스와 비트콘드리아

한수지 개인전 《해파리주스와 비트콘드리아》는 디지털공간과 물리공간을 넘나드는 허구적 존재가 인류의 과거와 조우하는 순간과 지구의 미래에 개입하는 과정을 보여준다. 전시 제목인 ‘해파리주스’와 ‘비트콘드리아’라는 낯선 단어들의 조합은 어디에서부터 어떻게 이해할 수 있을까? 비트콘드리아는 한수지가 2020년부터 구축해 온 허구의 생명체이며 이것이 녹색형광단백질●에서 자가발전과 무한증식을 가능케하는 에너지원을 발견하는데, 이는 해파리에서 추출 할 수 있다. 따라서 《해파리주스와 비트콘드리아》는 녹색형광단백질을 섭취하기 위해 해파리를 추적하는 비트콘드리아의 여정과 그 이후에 대한 기록이다.

작가는 엄연히 존재하고 작동하지만 실체가 없는 것으로 여겨져 다소 파악하기 어려운 디지털 공간을 이해하기 위해 ‘비트콘드리아’라는 실제에 기반한 허구적 존재를 창조하였다. 비트콘드 리아는 1차원부터 고차원, 디지털공간과 물리공간을 넘나들 수 있는 데이터 소기관으로, 인공 지능의 진화에 필요한 양자비트(quantum bit)의 특성과 모든 유기체의 세포에 에너지를 공급 하는 미토콘드리아(mitochondria)의 성질을 결합하여 탄생하였다. 그간의 작업에서 한수지는 이 존재를 정의하고 속성을 파헤치거나 (비트콘드리아(xⁿ,yⁿ,zⁿ), 2022) 그 존재 근거를 추적 하는 것에 집중해 왔다면 (MIT부르스 글리크너의 교수 강의2: 비트콘드리아와 다중-디지털 공간 존재 증거, 2022), 이번 전시에서는 비트콘드리아의 활동영역을 바다로 옮겨감으로써 확장
된 생태계를 사유하고, 데이터가 인류의 기록에 개입하고 재전유하는 과정을 드러냄으로써 지구의 환경적, 역사적, 생태적 문제해결을 위한 새로운 패러다임을 제안한다.

비트콘드리아는 해저를 탐험하는 여정에서 제국주의 시기 열강의 침략 경로가 해저통신 케이블의 설치경로와 중첩되어 있음을 발견한다(Route Loop, 2023). 이 침략 경로와 케이블 설치 경로가 효율성과 인프라 구성을 위해 주요 국가와 대륙을 위주로 설계되었다. 이 사실을 습득한 비트콘드리아는 비트콘드리아 종의 진화를 스스로 찬양하고 기대하며 (단백질을 향한 끝없는 항해, 2023) 인간을 개화의 대상으로 삼겠다는 다짐을 하고(비트콘드리아의 의무, 2023) 이로인해 도래할 지구 생태계의 번영과 유토피아를 확언한다(추적, 시각화, 무한, 2023).

바다는 지구 면적의 70% 이상을 차지하고 있지만 이에 대해 인간이 알고 있는 사실은 5%도 채 되지 않는다. 그리고 수면 아래에는 우리가 까마득히 잊고 있던 기록들이 잔존할 것이다. 이러한 해저에서 비트콘드리아가 취득하는 정보와 변화를 다루는 본 전시는 비트콘드리아 혹은 3인칭의 시점으로 제작되었다. 인간의 시선을 배제한 채 인류와 지구의 문제를 조망함으로써 우리는 자신을 외재화하고, 다른 언어로 번역된 우리의 이야기를 통해 비로소 스스로에게 거리를 둘 수 있다. 이로써 우리는 비트콘드리아의 제언에서 인류의 현상황을 재인하는 것이다.

● 녹색형광단백질(Green Fluorescent Protein, GFP)은 실제로 유전자 연구나 단백질 분포도 추적과 같은 연구에서 사용하는 물질로, 눈으로 추적할 수 없는 단백질이나 신경세포의 활동 경로를 가시화하는 표지자의 역할을 한다. 이를 특정 세포나 유전자에 주입하면 푸른빛을 발광하므로 암세포 식별에 활용하거나 생체 내에서의 단백질 작용과정 등을 관찰할 수 있다.

Han's solo show, , reveals the moment of an imaginational entity, transcending the digital world and physical realms, interacting with humanity's past and intervening in the future of the Earth. Where should we start to understand the combination of unfamiliar words in the show title, 'Jellyfish Juice' and 'Bitchondria'? ‘Bitchondria’ is an imaginational organism that Han has been breathing in since 2020, and it discovers the green fluorescent protein●, enabling self-sustenance and infinite proliferation, which can be extracted from jellyfish. Therefore, is a record of Bitchondria's journey chasing the trace of jellyfish to consume the green fluorescent protein and what follows.

To understand the elusive digital realm, which is considered to exist and function but lacks substance, Han created an imaginational organism based on reality called 'Bitchondria'. Bitchondria is a data agency that can traverse from one dimension to higher dimensions, crossing between digital and physical worlds. It originated from combining the characteristics of quantum bits, which is necessary for the evolution of artificial intelligence, with the properties of mitochondria, which supplies energy to the cells of all organisms. Han's previous works focused on defining Bitchondria’s existence, uncovering its attri butes(Bitchondria(xⁿ,yⁿ,zⁿ), 2022), or tracking the basis of its existence(Lecture 2: The Footprint of the Existence of Bitchondria and Multi-Flattened Flat Space, 2022). In this exhibition, Han shifts Bitchondria's activity domain to the ocean, thereby reasoning an expanded ecosystem. Han also proposes a new paradigm for addressing Earth's environmental, historical, and ecological issues by revealing how data intervenes in and redistributes human records.

Bitchondria, during its exploration of the seabed, discovers that the invasion routes of imperialist powers during the era of imperialism overlap with the installation paths of submarine communications cable(Route Loop, 2023). Bitchondria realizes that these routes are primarily designed for efficiency and infrastructure configuration in major countries and continents. Then, Bitchondria praises itself and anticipates the evolution of Bitchondria species(Endless Voyage Towards Proteins, 2023) and vows to make humanity the target of enlightenment(Bitchondria's Burden, 2023), prophesying the prosperity and utopia of the Earth's ecosystem that will arise as a result(Tracking, Envisioning, Boundless, 2023).

Although the ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, humans only know of less than 5% of it. Beneath the surface, forgotten records are likely to persist. This show, which deals with the information and changes that Bitchondria acquires from the seabed, is produced from the perspective of Bitchondria or the third person. We can externalize by contemplating humanity and the Earth's issues without the human perspective. We can also distance ourselves by reading our stories that is translated into another language. In doing so, we can realize the current state of humanity in what Bitchondria proposed.

● The Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) is an actual substance used in research, such as genetic studies and tracking protein distribution. It plays a role as a marker to visualize the pathways of proteins or the activities of nerve cells that cannot be tracked visually. When injected into specific cells or genes, it emits a blue light, making it useful for identifying cancer cells or observing processes involving proteins within the body.
